The Fire Science program prepares graduates for entry-level firefighter positions with various emergency organizations, including fire departments, industry emergency response teams, and first responder agencies. The program allows students to complete the International Fire Science Training Association (IFSTA) Firefighter I and II, Hazardous Materials Awareness, and Hazadous Materials Operations certificates while completing a Certificate A (16 credits), and EMT Certificate is included in the Certificate B (32 credits), or an Associate degree (65 credits), and prepare for transfer to a bachelor degree program at an area university. This program is designed to prepare students for careers in fire fighting, fire investigation, consulting, industrial safety, fire engineering and fire prevention.
Students who successfully complete this program should:
1) Be able to provide the community with the highest quality of professional fire protection.
2) Have knowledge and skills to safely protect the citizenry and its property against all types of emergencies.
3) Develope a critical understanding of the field of fire science through a balance of theory and practical application.
4) Be fully capable to lead, manage and collaborate with colleagues, subordinates, constituents and the communities they serve.
5) Be able to critically assess the current and historical strategies, practices and policies that guide the modern fire and emergency services profession, particularly in a dynamic and multicultural envirnoment.

Fire Science Prior Learning Credit (PLC) Policy
Current fire personnel may be eligible for prior learning credits (PLC) based on their successful completion of IFSTA certifications in Firefighter I and II, Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator or Structural Collapse Rescue Technician Level I and II. Students seeking award of college credit through the PLC policy must meet the following criteria:
- The student must have completed approved Fire Science training courses through an IFSTA approved training program (i.e. Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute at the University of Kansas).
- The student must be enrolled in the Fire Science program at Coffeyville Community College to request prior learning credits.
- The courses for which students receive credit will be added to their transcript once the student has completed a minimum of 9 credits at Coffeyville Community College with a minimum 2.0 GPA (C) average or better. Credit for CCC courses will not be awarded without proof of the Fire Service certifications and/or official transcripts from an IFSTA approved training program.
- All earned prior learning credits will receive a grade of “CR” for credit on the CCC transcript.
- Credit obtained through the PLC Policy may not transfer to another college or university.
- Credit cannot be used to repeat classroom credit in which a student has received a grade.
- Credit cannot be used to meet the enrollment requirements for government-funded financial aid programs or to meet resident credit requirements for graduation.
- Students who meet the Fire Science PLC Policy requirements will be eligible for up to 32 college credits.
